Florida Manufacturing Jobs Created by New Project

One company is helping to create hundreds of Florida manufacturing jobs.

Buckeye Technologies Inc. recently announced that it will receive $7.4 million in state funds to restart the company's Foley Energy Project at its wood fibers manufacturing plant in Florida. The project, which consists of installing a condensing steam turbine at the company's plant near Perry, Fla., had been put on hold since last year because of the economy.

Buckeye, which is based in Memphis, Tenn., makes specialty fibers and non-woven materials for consumer and industrial users, according to an article by the Memphis Business Journal.

Once the installation begins, it will create 148 direct jobs and help retain 555 direct jobs and 1,000 indirect jobs. Funding is coming from Florida's Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development’s Quick Action Closing Fund.

The company plans to invest about $32.3 million for the turbine and equipment. The project will provide about 12 megawatts of electrical power for resale from renewable wood resources and reduce the plant’s dependency on fossil fuels by an equivalent of 200,000 barrels of oil per year.

With any luck, the added jobs will help revive Florida's manufacturing industry. That industry employed 331,200 workers during June, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 335,000 workers during May and an 11.3 percent decrease from last year.

Florida's economy as a whole also has been suffering lately. During June, the state saw its unemployment rate increase from 10.3 percent to 10.6 percent, which was higher than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.5 percent.

The state had a total non-farm employment of 7,379,400 workers during June, down from 7,399,300 workers during May and a 5.1 percent decrease from last year.
